Respond to urgent actions

photoYou can take international solidarity action by responding to action requests from our Southern partners

Violence against trade unions, the expulsion of small producers and the violation of human rights are a daily occurrence in tropical fruit producing countries. Make Fruit Fair! receives many urgent action requests from our partner organisations asking for support. We will keep you informed of how the Urgent Actions we issue progress.

Previous actions

Among the successes of previous Urgent Actions are:

  • Restoration of protection for SITRABI (Guatemalan banana workers union) General Secretary Noe Ramirez, with a commitment from the Guatemalan government to establish a ‘security perimeter’ for other SITRABI leaders, following the killing in 2011 of six members and ex-members of SITRABI.
  • Intervention by Chiquita (the buyer), Rainforest Alliance (the certifier), and the Honduran Labour Ministry in response to the failure of the owners of the Tres Hermanas plantations in Honduras to recognise the legality of the SITRAINBA union.
  • Positive steps taken by Chiquita to improve the situation for women on their plantations. In particular, the creation of a Women’s Committee within the auspicies of the Chiquita/IUF/COLSIBA International Framework Agreement, the development of training and mentoring programs for women; and proposals to increase employment opportunities for women.
